Despite McKayla Maroney’s disappointing silver medal finish in the Olympic gymnastics vault finals August 5, Royal Kate Middleton provided a chance moment to remember for the other four members of Team USA’s unforgettable Fab Five.
The gold medal winning squad—including 2012 London Games individual all-around champion Gabby Douglas, reigning World Champ Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross—were on hand to cheer on Maroney. The teens were stunned when Middleton, who was also taking in the competition at the North Greenwich Arena, approached them to chat.
Two of the girls tweeted their excitement soon after. Raisman was first to share, writing “Just met princess Kate with @jordyn_wieber @kyla_ross96 & @gabrielledoug she is so beautiful & so nice! I told her I loved her style lol :)”
Wieber followed soon after with a tweet of her own that expressed gratitude to the popular British figure: “Can’t believe I just met Princess Kate Middleton! She was in the crowd at the competition and she stood up to talk to us! #honored “
The meeting represented yet another once in a lifetime moment for Team USA’s impressive gymnasts, who have so far medalled successfully in all three events in which they’ve taken part. But what a disappointment that Maroney didn’t get to be with them to share in the experience.
Women’s Olympic gymnastics competition resumes August 6 with the uneven bars finals, featuring Douglas and home nation favorite Beth Tweddle.
